Career Search Frustration Part 1: The Current State of the Corporate Career Search

In this part of a 3-part series, we’ll focus on the frustrations, roadblocks and pitfalls of the circus that’s the corporate hiring process.

What to Do After Getting Fired

You’ve worked your way up the corporate ladder and are now a Director, VP, or even a C-level executive. Congratulations on your success thus far! However, what happens when the company that employs you downsizes, gets bought out, or simply fails? Suddenly, due to no fault of your own, you’re out of a job. Now what?

The first thing that often happens is the person goes through a bit of a grieving process. Losing a job is one of the most stressful things a person can encounter and this fact should not be discounted. Grieve. Mourn. Then pick yourself up off the mat and find the next position.Any career coach or outplacement firm will immediately direct you towards two things:

  1. Update your resume
  2. Start networking

How to Update Your Resume

  • How do you update your resume in a way that it will match you to all the jobs and in all the industries you might be a great candidate for?
  • How do you highlight all your skills and accomplishments in no more than two pages?
  • How do you ensure all the appropriate keywords are used on your resume to get through the screening software?
  • How do you know what the hell a keyword is?
  • And most importantly…How do you know if someone will actually read your resume after all of this work?

The answers to these questions:

You can’t. You won’t. You don’t. Quite possibly, they won’t.

How to Get Started Networking

If that came off too futile, then I am sure the networking will work. Now, get on LinkedIn and…

  • Tell every one of your connections you are out of work and ask them if they know anyone hiring.
  • Search your industry to find hiring managers or decision makers and connect with them.  Then ask them if they will schedule a time to talk to you about how you can help their company.
  • Look at other industries you might be interested in and do the same thing.
  • Now do the same thing, but in person.  Call everyone you know personally and professionally and ask them if they, or anyone they know, is hiring.
  • Then go to networking groups and do the same thing.

All this effort, and frustration, only to get a similar job in a company just like the one you used to work for. You know, the company that one day just decided they didn’t need you or want you anymore. I am sure that won’t happen again…right?
